OTOYOL YATIRIM VE İŞLETME A.Ş. has awarded to the Japanese consortium IHI-ITOCHU, for the construction of İzmit bay crossing suspension bridge, which is a part of the largest project in the history of Turkish Republic, that will be carried out at one shot with the build-operate-transfer mode.
The suspensiom bridge will allow crossing the bay in 6 mitues. The Contract between OTOYOL A.Ş. and IHI-ITOCHU Consortium has been signed for the project of İzmit Bay Crossing Suspension Bridge, which will decrease the travel time between İstanbul and İzmir to 3.5 hours once completed. The signatures regarding the İzmit Bay Crossing Bridge project have been placed during a ceremony that took place in Sait Halim Paşa Mansion on the 8th of September on Thursday, with the participation of the Minister of Transport and Communication His Excellency Binali YILDIRIM.
On May 24th, 2011, a Motorway Press Release Meeting was realized in the İzmir Belkahve Construction Site with the participation of the Minister of Transport and Communication His Excellency Binali YILDIRIM.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony for Gebze-Orhangazi-İzmir Motorway to be constructed as Build-Operate-Transfer Model was held on February 27th, 2011 in Alsancak Cumhuriyet Square with the participation of the Minister of Transport and Communication His Excellency Binali Yıldırım.
The ESIA-Public Consultation Meetings were held between 17th January and 2nd February 2011. The representatives of OTOYOL A.Ş. and Regional Directorate of Highways participated in the public meetings in 5 main towns.
A Stakeholder Engagement Plan was developed. The ESIA team has been undertaking wide consultations during the ESIA study involving:
Letters with accompanying project information being sent to a long list of government agencies (national, provincial, district and village) requesting their views on the Project,
Similar written requests going to non-governmental organisations representing environmental, social and business interests,
Public meetings in 12 locations along the route with invitations and publicity material(posters and leaflets) sent to Muhtars of 150-200 settlements along the route,
National and local advertising of the consultation process including dates of meetings and contact details for further information,
A website being established where all interested parties can view information and submit comments, Establishment of a stakeholder register for recording all comments.
Gebze Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Gebze-Orhangazi-İzmir Motorway to be constructed as Build-Operate-Transfer Model was held on October 28th, 2010 in Kocaeli Province, Dilovası District with the participation of the Prime Minister His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the members of the Consortium.
The Gebze-Orhangazi-İzmir Motorway (including İzmit Bay Crossing and Connection Roads) Build-Operate-Transfer Project was tendered on April 9th, 2009, and the proposal by Nurol – Özaltın – Makyol – Astaldi – Yüksel – Göçay group involving a period of 22 years and 4 months (construction + operation) was determined to be the best proposal. The Contract that was initialized by the General Directorate of Highways following the tender; was approved by the High Planning Council with the contributions of entities like the Treasury, State Planning Organization and Revenue Board, and was signed by all parties as the biggest Motorway Project of Turkey on September 27th, 2010.
